Université Sainte-Anne is a certified centre for the Test d’évaluation de français (TEF).

TEF Canada

TEF Canada has been designated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and Québec’s Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI) for all economic immigration programs that require, or accept, proof of language skills.

TEF Canada results are also considered acceptable proof for Canadian citizenship applications.

The tests

TEF evaluates your spoken and written language skills:

  1. Oral comprehension: 40 min – 40 questions
  2. Written comprehension: 60 min – 40 questions
  3. Oral expression: 15 min – 2 topics to be covered
  4. Written expression: 60 min – 2 topics to be covered

Methods of taking the test

Oral comprehension, Written comprehension, and Written expression tests are taken on a computer at the test centre. Oral expression is assessed by an examiner and will also be recorded for evaluation purposes.

If you cancel within five (5) days of a TEF session, a 10% cancellation fee will be deducted.

It is the candidate’s responsibility to determine which tests they must take. All language-proficiency tests considered acceptable by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada are available on the IRCC website.

Registration

Please complete your registration in advance, as the organization administering the TEF blocks registrations seven (7) days before the date of a session. We are then unable to register additional candidates.

Sessions are regularly offered at the Halifax campus on Fridays (the test can only be taken in person). Depending upon the examiners’ availability, additional sessions can be offered upon request.

How to register

1 Click on the “Register” button below. You will be directed to the university’s Shopify page.
2 Choose your product (type and date). Finalize your payment. You will then receive an email confirming your registration.
3 Complete the following form: TEF - Formulaire de préinscription TEF - Preregistration form (office.com) This information will enable us to register you on the platform that manages the test.
4 You will then receive your TEF invitation.
Please note that your registration will only be validated once the session fee has been paid AND the registration form has been completed.

On the day of your test

On the day of the test, you will need to present yourself to the TEF manager with your invitation and photo ID with signature (valid passport / valid driving licence / national ID card).

Test results

After finishing your test, you will receive a certificate of completion. Each certificate is detailed and personalized. For each test, it gives you: the number of points obtained, the level reached and a commentary on your current skills in general French.

You will receive your certificate within two (2) to four (4) weeks. Results are valid for two (2) years.

No diploma is required to take the TEF Canada test. You can take the test more than once, provided you wait 30 days before retaking the test.
