This course covers some of the major works of the shortest and richest period in English literature, c. 1900-1945, including one play. Particular attention will be paid to narrative, poetic, and dramatic preoccupations with subjectivity, disintegration, loss, and even alienation of the reader. Modernist experimentation in other art forms—theatre, painting, architecture, film, music, etc.—will also be considered. Major authors include Joyce, Woolf, Eliot, and Beckett.
