Church Point (NS), November 18, 2021 – Université Sainte-Anne's Board of Governors is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Martine Béland as Vice-President Academic & Research. This decision was ratified by the Board at a special meeting held October 27, 2021.

Dr. Béland, who holds a doctorate in philosophy from École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris and three graduate degrees in philosophy, German studies and political studies, will succeed Dr. Kenneth Deveau as of January 1st, 2022.

Since 2018, Dr. Béland has been the Director of the Centre canadien d'études allemandes et européennes (‘Canadian Centre of German and European Studies') and adjunct professor in the department of World Literatures and Languages at Université de Montréal. In July 2020, she moved to Halifax with her family to hold a parallel position as a visiting scholar in Saint Mary's University's Philosophy Department.

Previously, Dr. Béland was a Professor of Philosophy at Cégep Édouard-Montpetit in Longueuil, Québec, where she was responsible for departmental coordination and fulfilled various administrative mandates, including coordinating the General Education Issue Table.

In addition to her experience with the CEGEP system, Dr. Béland has a strong commitment to academia, both in terms of teaching and funded research. She has taught and supervised students at Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières and at Université de Montréal and was a visiting scholar and fellow in France and Germany. She builds and manages interdisciplinary research teams, and she is experienced in active representation, grant administration and curriculum supervision.

Originally from Ottawa, Dr. Béland expresses herself in French, English and German, and has a keen grasp of the issues and challenges of the Canadian Francophonie and of teaching and research in a minority setting.

Université Sainte-Anne's President, Allister Surette, welcomes the appointment of the new Vice-President. “I am delighted with the arrival of Dr. Béland to Université Sainte-Anne. This scholar with an international reputation has extensive administrative and teaching experience at both the university and college levels. Her thorough knowledge of languages, humanities and social sciences, and research and postsecondary teaching partnerships will be definite assets in the context of her duties. I have no doubt that Dr. Béland will successfully meet this new challenge,” states the University President.

Université Sainte-Anne congratulates Dr. Martine Béland and wishes her success in her new position.
