Church Point (NS), July 6, 2026 - Université Sainte-Anne is proud to highlight the 15th anniversary of the Marine Research Centre (CRM), a pillar of innovation and industry support in Nova Scotia’s marine sector. Established in 2010, the CRM set out with the mission of assisting marine businesses with their challenges and ambitions by providing them with expertise, infrastructure, and passion.

“On Isle Madame, we are surrounded by the sea, and it is an integral part of our lives,” explains Michelle Thériault, Director of the CRM. “The marine industry is demanding and constantly evolving. Businesses have innovative ideas but often lack the time or resources to bring them to life. That’s where we come in: we have the researchers, the facilities, and the motivation to help them test and develop these ideas.”

The CRM has state-of-the-art infrastructure, including dry and wet laboratories, storage systems for fish and shellfish, as well as provincially licensed hatcheries. These facilities support a wide range of research on species such as lobster, snow crab, scallops, and seaweed. The centre also offers mobile services to support businesses directly in the field, including water-quality and lobster-quality testing.

“We’re really lucky to have Michelle Thériault and her team. They can come help us if we’re having trouble with lobster quality or water quality. We call them and they’re here in less than 5 minutes. Any question we have, Michelle and her team have answered it for us.”

Since 2016, the CRM has offered a specialized course on lobster quality and handling, mandatory for licensed buyers in Nova Scotia. This training covers lobster biology and best handling practices, both essential for preserving quality and maximizing the industry’s economic value.

In addition to its applied research activities, the CRM plays an essential role in training students at Université Sainte-Anne. “The CRM is unique: it provides hands-on experience in the marine industries, which is crucial for the future of the industry and our communities,” says Dan Lane, associate professor and affiliated CRM researcher.

Through its partnerships and projects, the CRM contributes not only to the prosperity of marine businesses but also to the vitality of Acadian coastal communities. This 15th anniversary marks an important milestone and reaffirms the commitment of the centre and Université Sainte-Anne to supporting innovation and sustainability in the maritime sector.
